“All right, we are here. Now what’s going on?” Edward asked as he closed the door to the library.

Teddy’s back was to him. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes. Julia, please know that I love you. Please, remember that. Give me a little time, darling. Teddy’s thoughts were interrupted by Edward’s insistence.

“Theodora, what is going on?” Edward turned her around to face him now.

“There is no easy way to say this.”

“For crying out loud, just say whatever you have to say!”

“I’m sorry, Edward. I really am. There are two things I have to tell you.” Teddy pointed to the chair opposite of her and they sat down facing each other.

Edward waited as Teddy collected her thoughts.

“I know that you have—we have—really tried to make our marriage work this past almost two years now.”

“Theodora, I love you,” Edward said quickly.

“Edward, I want a divorce,” Teddy said bluntly. “I’m sorry. I don’t know any other way of making it less painful.”

“Less painful?” Edward said sarcastically.

“Yes, I don’t want to hurt you. But, I don’t want to be married to you anymore.”

“Is there someone else?”

“Yes, there is.” Teddy looked straight at him.

Edward stared at her in shock. She could tell that this is not something that he would have ever expected. He had asked the question expecting her to deny it.

“Edward, you know that this marriage hasn’t worked for a long time.”

“I am willing to try, Theodora. You know I have tried. We can still make it work. I can forgive you. I know this is probably due to…my own failings in the past,” Edward argued.

“Edward, I can’t,” Teddy said softly. “I loved you with an adolescent idea of romance. It wasn’t based on realism. Our marriage hasn’t worked, Edward. I should have ended it a long time ago. I can’t lie to myself anymore. When I found out that you had been unfaithful, I thought I would die. But, I didn’t. What died were the rose-colored dreams.”

“Teddy…please,” Edward said softly.
